Amazonite is a blue-green form of feldspar, the mineral family that makes up about half of the earth's crust. Here's what it is, where the color comes from and how to tell a real piece.
Its mineral name is microcline, a potassium feldspar from the same family as the pink feldspar in granite.
Tiny amounts locked inside the crystal turn it blue-green. It isn't copper, as people once thought.
Harder than window glass, but it can chip along its flat faces, so don't drop it on tile.
Green stones were once said to come from there, but no amazonite has been found near the river.
Egyptians made beads and small amulets from it more than 3,000 years ago.
Long, strong sunlight can fade the color. Wipe it with a dry cloth.
