Fluorite, in plain facts
Fluorite is a soft, colorful mineral that often holds purple, green and blue in one piece.
A mineral made of calcium and fluorine.
Traces of other elements and tiny flaws in the crystal give it purple, green and blue zones.
Fluorite is the reference mineral for 4 on the scale. Softer than glass, so handle with care.
Scientists named fluorescence after fluorite, which can glow under ultraviolet light.
From fluere. It was added to molten metal to help it flow.
It chips and scratches easily, and strong sun can fade it. Dust it gently.
Real or dyed? How to tell
Dyed stones and glass are sold as rainbow fluorite. Here's how to tell them apart.
Real
- Colors that blend into each other
- Flat, glassy break faces
- Each piece different
- A few cloudy or clear zones
Usually dyed
- Sharp, perfectly straight stripes
- Neon colors
- Air bubbles inside
- Identical pieces
It started with a fake rose quartz.
We once paid for rose quartz online. What arrived was a piece of painted glass in a plastic bag, with nothing to say what it was or where it came from.
