Selenite is a form of gypsum, the same mineral used to make plaster. It's soft enough to carve, which is how these plates get their designs.
The silky kind sold as selenite is satin spar, a fibrous form of gypsum.
Its fibers carry light along their length, giving the surface a soft sheen.
Soft enough to scratch with a fingernail, so handle it gently.
Named after the Greek moon goddess, for its pale, moon-like shine.
Its softness lets each plate be engraved, so lines vary a little from plate to plate.
Gypsum slowly dissolves in water. Dust it with a dry cloth.
It started with a fake rose quartz.
We once paid for rose quartz online. What arrived was a piece of painted glass in a plastic bag, with nothing to say what it was or where it came from.
