What each stone in this set is, one thing worth knowing about it, and how to tell a real one.
First described: Greenland, 1811. Scientists first described sodalite from rocks in Greenland. Hardness: 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.
In history: Powdered into blue paint. Powdered lapis made ultramarine, the costly blue in Renaissance paintings. Hardness: 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale.
The name: Greek for "ice". Ancient Greeks thought clear quartz was ice frozen so hard it would never melt, and called it krystallos. Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale.
Real or dyed? How to tell
