Some pieces will show a slight natural sheen or iridescence when held to light — this is called the rainbow effect and is a hallmark of genuine natural obsidian. Genuine black obsidian is completely smooth and glassy with a deep mirror-black surface. When held to light you may see a slight natural sheen or iridescence inside the stone — this is completely normal and a sign of authenticity, not a flaw.
Real obsidian feels noticeably heavy and cool for its size — denser than glass or plastic. It will also have tiny natural surface variations — slight marks or colour shifts across the surface. A perfectly uniform mirror-black stone with zero variation is usually synthetic glass, not real obsidian.
