Genuine black tourmaline has a distinctive appearance that is difficult to fake. Look for the deep parallel striations — vertical grooves running along the length of the stone. These are the crystal's natural growth pattern and are present on every authentic piece. Run your finger along the surface and you will feel them clearly.
Real tourmaline is also heavier than it looks, with a slight metallic sheen on the striated faces when held up to light. Some faces will appear almost reflective — this is normal. Black obsidian is often confused with tourmaline but is smooth and glassy. If it has striations, it is tourmaline.
