Genuine lapis lazuli always contains two things: white calcite patches and gold pyrite flecks. The calcite creates the white or grey streaks you see across the blue surface. The pyrite creates the tiny metallic gold sparkle. Both are natural minerals formed inside the stone — they cannot be faked convincingly.
Dyed howlite — the most common fake — looks uniformly blue with no gold flecks and no calcite variation. If every part of the stone is the same deep blue with no variation and no sparkle, it is not genuine lapis. Real lapis always has character — the patterns are never the same twice.
