Lapis lazuli is a rock made of several minerals: deep-blue lazurite, white calcite and golden pyrite.
Its blue is lazurite. White streaks are calcite, and the gold flecks are pyrite.
The little sparkles are real pyrite, often called fool's gold.
Softer than quartz, so keep it away from harder stones that could scratch it.
Powdered lapis made ultramarine, the costly blue in Renaissance paintings.
The mines of Afghanistan have produced lapis for more than 6,000 years.
